I’m excited to share my recent adventure on Koh Larn, a stunning island paradise located just off the coast of Pattaya, Thailand. Known as the Coral Island, this enchanting destination is a mere 7 kilometers away from Pattaya and approximately two hours south of the bustling city of Bangkok. In this article, I’ll take you on a journey through the natural wonders, pristine beaches, and exciting activities that await you on this little piece of paradise.
Island Overview
Koh Larn is a small, mountainous island covered in lush vegetation, measuring about 4.5 kilometers in length, 2 kilometers in width, and reaching a height of 180 meters at its highest point. The island features narrow roads, some of which are quite steep, making it accessible for both motorcycles and cars.
The Beautiful Beaches
Koh Larn is renowned for its pristine beaches, and there are six main ones to explore. In this article, I’ll highlight the top three, which are a must-visit during your trip.
1. Samae Beach
Samae Beach is often considered one of the best on Koh Larn. With over 500 meters of stable sand, it’s the perfect spot to soak up the sun and enjoy the crystal-clear waters. For those who prioritize safety, there’s a designated swimming area complete with a safety fence. You can also rent beach chairs for a comfortable day by the sea.
One of the highlights of Samae Beach is the delightful array of dining options. You can savor delicious Thai cuisine, refreshing drinks, cocktails, fresh seafood, and even indulge in ice cream, all from the comfort of seaside restaurants and bars. If you’re planning to stay overnight, a beachfront resort is available for a tranquil beachfront experience. You can reach Samae Beach either by chartering a speedboat from Pattaya or by taking a taxi from one of Koh Larn’s two ferry piers: Na Baan Pier and Tawaen Beach Pier.
2. Tawaen Beach
Tawaen Beach is the most popular destination on Koh Larn, especially during peak tourist seasons. While it can get quite crowded, this vibrant beach offers a wide variety of restaurants serving everything from seafood to Thai and international dishes. What’s more, beachfront bars are ready to serve you cocktails, fresh fruit, and ice cream directly to your beach chair. If you’re an adventure seeker, you can try jet skiing and swimming to get your adrenaline pumping.
3. Tien Beach
For a more serene beach experience, Tien Beach is your go-to destination. With its stunning sandy shoreline, swaying palm trees, and breathtaking views of Koh Larn’s lush interior, Tien Beach is the perfect place to unwind. Despite its undeniable charm with its white sand and azure waters, Tien Beach is one of the quieter beaches on the island, allowing you to fully embrace the tranquility. The fastest way to reach Tien Beach is by taking a speedboat from Pattaya or hopping on a ferry from either Na Baan Pier or Tawaen Beach Pier.
Getting to Koh Larn
Getting to Koh Larn is relatively easy. You have two primary options: speedboat or ferry.
Speedboat
If you’re in a hurry to reach the island, speedboats are the quickest option, taking just about 20 minutes from Pattaya to Koh Larn. You’ll find numerous speedboats available for rent at Bali Hai Pier, situated just south of Pattaya’s famous Walking Street. Prices for speedboat rentals vary, depending on the boat’s size, ranging from 1,500 to 3,500 Baht.
Ferry
Alternatively, you can choose to take a ferry to Koh Larn. While it’s a bit slower than a speedboat, it’s more budget-friendly. Ferries depart from Bali Hai Pier in the southern part of Pattaya and provide access to two piers on Koh Larn: Na Baan Pier and Tawaen Beach Pier. The ferry ride takes approximately 45 minutes, and the fare for a one-way trip is just 30 Baht.
Island Activities
Koh Larn isn’t just about its picturesque beaches; it’s also known for its vibrant nightlife, making it an ideal destination for tourists seeking a peaceful beach getaway. The island’s natural beauty and clear waters create the perfect environment for snorkeling and water sports.
Samae Beach, Tawaen Beach, and Tien Beach are the top choices for swimming and relaxation. You can explore the island’s lush greenery through its hiking trails and enjoy various water activities such as jet skiing and parasailing.
Don’t forget to check out the availability of beach chairs for rent at Samae Beach, although prices may vary depending on the season. The beaches on Koh Larn are famous for their pristine white sand and crystal-clear blue waters. Keep in mind that some of the island’s roads can be quite steep and challenging to navigate, so motorcycles and cars are the primary modes of transportation.
Exploring the Island
Bali Hai Pier in Pattaya is your central hub for boat transportation to Koh Larn. As mentioned earlier, you can rent speedboats of various sizes from multiple operators at this pier, allowing you to choose the one that suits your needs and budget. The ferry remains a cost-effective means of transportation, offering two landing points on Koh Larn for added convenience: Na Baan Pier and Tawaen Beach Pier.
Safety First
While enjoying the island’s beautiful beaches, safety remains a priority. Designated swimming areas and the availability of beach chairs are provided for the comfort and safety of beachgoers. Samae Beach is particularly known for its long stretch of stable sand, making it a great choice for families and sunbathers.
